This article really got me thinking about context in relation to creative output. How many times has a movie (There Will Be Blood, Bottle Rocket, Gattaca) really hit me because of the mood or mode or state of life I was in at the time I saw it? Happens all the time. How many albums have I loved because they perfectly fit the tone of my life when I first heard them? Out of context those albums might have been brushed off, or only mildly appreciated. Of course as a maker of creative things I take some comfort in this, you can’t expect everyone to take your work in the context you created it, and you can’t expect them to accept it if their world isn’t aligned with the root of what you’re doing. Of course they just might not like your work either, and that’s the sucky part. (ps, if anyone knows where I got the pic in this post shoot me an email or in the comments, I lost the link.)
